Dr. Leonard J. Faye is chiropractor who has practiced in 2 worlds and spent his 50+ year career building a bridge between them. In one, he is an old-school master of manipulation practicing as a holistic drugless practitioner where spinal dysfunction is a major contributor to human ill-health, disability, and reduced quality of life. In the other, he is a skeptical evidence-based clinician who demands a sound rational and research basis to guide his clinical encounters. In his recently published book , “Chiropractic Odyssey – A Journey of Practice, Observation and Reading Research”, he documents his journey.
I found his book to be a fascinating combination of several storylines. It is a personal memoir of his professional life in chiropractic. It is an eyewitness account of the history of the chiropractic profession globally from one who was actively involved in its development. Finally, it is a primer describing the rational and research basis for the practice of manual manipulation and adjustment for the 21st-century chiropractor.
Dr. Faye begins his quest from his personal experience with a chiropractor successfully aiding his recovery from rheumatic fever as a teenager. His realization early on in his training that chiropractic adjustments were an effective practice without a coherent theory led him to develop and teach of a multifactorial model outlining a new paradigm for explaining the basic principles of the chiropractic orientation to health and disease. He recounts his decades of teaching and challenging fellow chiropractors, and his efforts to bring many segments of the profession from a “principle-based “ or static approach to patient care, to a dynamic patient-centered one.
I was a student of Len Faye and MPI back in the 1980’s, and I found it fascinating to find out much of the backstory to what was going back then that I was not fully aware of. Reading this book was time well spent. I would make this essential reading for any chiropractic student, or practicing DC, to enlighten them on how one of the pioneers of evidence-influenced practice in chiropractic came to his conclusions.
